In the Shadow of Chimpanzees is based in and around Sunbird Hill, Uganda’s best private birding site on the edge of Kibale Forest.

Sunbird Hill comprises 16 hectares of regenerating farmland bordering Kibale National Park. The area is repeatedly visited by chimpanzees, baboons, monkeys, the occasional otter, African bushbuck and the great African elephants herd (at night).
Based on data obtained from surveys on our most recent visitors, most recent visitors, the tourists’ favorites have been confirmed to be the numerous unique bird species (over 240), newly discovered African butterflies and moth species, as well as uniquely existing insects, reptiles, and frogs. These faunas have increasingly become our most treasured tourist attraction.
Sunbird Hill is a Ugandan bird ringing site and training centre for local wildlife enthusiasts and the team coordinates and carries out the NatureUganda Bird Population Monitoring Programme for the Kibale Conservation Area (comprising Kibale Forest, Semliki Wildlife Reserve, Semliki National Park, Katonga Wildlife Reserve, Lake Saka, Toro Botanical Gardens and Kafred Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary).
